Italy spa towns?
 

Anyone had any recent experience staying at or near spa towns in lower Tuscany? We are of the senior variety and could use a week or so of hot baths after a month of rugged touring. I have done a search here, but would appreciate suggestions. Thanks. Keith

Hi Keith,<BR><BR>My senior mother and I are planning on visiting the hot springs in Viterbo (abut 100 km north of Rome) in October. From what I've read it has been used since the Etruscans and Roman times down to the present as a spa and relaxation. My husband and I based our stay in Italy in MOntecatini Terme 4 years ago through a recommendation by a relative we have in Italy. They felt it would be a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Florence. We loved it. While others may disagree because Montecatini lacks a historic "feel" and old architecture, we loved escaping the fumes of Florence for the beautiful park like feel of Montecatini with it's palms trees and thermal baths. We felt like we were at a resort island and yet we traveled every day to Lucca(30 min. away), Florence(40 min. away) and other surrounding Tuscan towns. Our last night we did stay in Florence and had the best of both experiences.<BR><BR>Denise

HI,<BR><BR>Try Bagno Vignoni, south of Montalcino. Not a spa town, per se, but there is a hot sulphur spring fed pool there. Do a search on this site--you'll find lots of mentions.<BR><BR>Patti

The place you want to go, and I think you can classify it as "southern" Tuscany, is the spa town of Saturnia. Actually, the springs are a mile or so away from town, but anyway the nice thing is that the springs are great, the town is still rather small, and the place isn't so overrun by tourists like other spa towns. It's located about 40-50 miles southeast of Grosseto.

We did a two-day break at Abano Terme--also in the area near Montecatini. The town was pleasant, lots of parks and shops. Most people were seniors.<BR><BR>We stayed at the Hotel Christoforo--very nice, moderately priced, in a park-like setting with a large thermal pool that had an indoor-outdoor configuration. Rooms were pleasant. The bed linens were so crisp and clean smelling that I actually wanted to ask management how they were laundered and pressed.<BR><BR>Half-board food was very good and there was live music for dancing in the dining room following dinner.<BR><BR>Whichever spa you choose --be certain to take bathing caps. It is a requirement in the pool area that your hair be covered.
