Italy - Sorrento or Naples for evening after Pompeii?

We will be based in Rome and will be taking a day trip to Pompeii. We plan on leaving Pompeii around 3:00 pm. We would like to have dinner in Naples or Sorrento. Any recommendations on which town or on a great cafe? Appreciate any feedback. Two days to go!

If it's a day trip, I recommend you head to Naples rather than going to Sorrento, which is farther away from Rome. Naples is the original home of pizza. My son and I still remember Pizza Trianon as having the best pizza we've ever eaten -- huge, cheap, and absolutely delicious.

Hi S,

Ypu have to go through Naples on the way home, so you might as well enjoy it.

We liked the Pizza Bellini - Piazza Bellini. It's more than just a pizza place.

Excellent lemon tarts.

From the train station, take the Metro to Piazza Cavour and the Archaeological Museum.

You can walk downhill back to the train station through Spaccanapoli.

First you should check to see how late the Archeological museum is open. You are very likely to want to see it after seeing Pompeii.

I would try some pizza (and pastries) as snacks, but for dinner, you might consider heading to Mimi Alla Ferrovia, which is not far from the train station.

All that said, the train station area is one of the msst unnerving areas of Napoli, with lots of prostitution and drug dealing going on, and lots of desparate looking people. (They are desperate; Napoli has many very poor people.)

I would take taxis, especially if you are a first time visitor to Napoli and don't know your way around. And I would certainly not be carrying a purse or wearing jewelry.

All that said, I would go back to Napoli in a heartbeat. I am not afraid of the town. But it had far more of an edge than other Italian cities.

Here's a map showing the location of Mimi alla Ferrovia. This way you can eat close to the train station and not worry about getting there or missing your after-dinner train.
