Italy- Solo Trip - Amalfi Coast
I am planning on going to Italy, I do not want to rent a car. I have seen Rome, Tuscany and Venice.
I would like to go somewhere in Italy where I haven't been, especially the Amalfi Coast. How can I travel around by myself without renting a car, i really do not want to join a tour. Any suggestions? Thanks. |
For our trip to The Amalfi Coast, we based in Sorrento, staying at Hotel Michelangelo (highly recommended), and were able to get around independently, without a car, very easilly.
The hotel is situated near the railway station and bus depot. So, train for Pompeii and Naples....very easy, bus for Positano, Amalfi etc, also very easy (and memorable) and there is a regular bus shuttle from the main square to the harbour for Hydrofoil to Capri and Ischia. We didn't have any problems getting around on our own. This really is a loveley part of Italy. You mind some useful info on our site at http://www.leightravelclub.com/theamalficoast.htm |
I'm leaving for Italy early April, Capri, Sorrento, and then Sicily. Part of my time on Sicily will be with a tour group, but the rest of the time I'll be solo, and have no intention of renting a car.
I'll be using trains, buses and ferries to get around Capri and the Amalfi Coast. I intend to visit at least Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, and see no need to use a car for any of them. Have you taken a look at a guide book? It will tell you about the Circumvesuviana trains (www.vesuviana.it), the SITA buses, and the ferries (e.g. www.alilauro.it). |
Hi, SWillams -
I have also traveled around the Amalfi Coast solo without a car - no problem! In fact, I suspect that I would have found having a car there to be an impediment. Enjoy! |
I have traveled to Italy (and specifically the Amalfi Coast) solo many, many times, and its a rewarding and fulfilling experience. While renting a car does make it a bit easier to get around (if you don't mind windy roads) the buses are easy to use and the locals are extremely friendly and are more than willing to help.
Use the big blue SITA buses to go from Sorrento through Positano, to Amalfi and up to beautiful Ravello. Tickets can be bought at any tobacco shop. Best of luck, Wendy ________________ www.amalficoasthost.com |
