Overnight trains also maximize time - leaving day time to doing things not schelpping to an airport, waiting for a plane - even the shortest flight can take most of a day.
Why would anyone NOT consider a yes long - you're sleeping though - and not tiring for most as many can sleep just dandy - I've taken literally hundreds of overnight trains and almost always slept very well and actually enjoyed waking up in a new city and a station kiosk cup of coffee.
different strokes for different folks but don't lump everyone together - not everyone is like you IME. That said if you can't sleep with a modicum of noise then yes you may arrive wiped out - again most I know do not but some do and can also get sleepless nights in hotel rooms fronting noisy streets.

<even the shortest flight can take most of a day>>
Please, PalenQ, no need to exaggerate! If you take an evening flight (the one that leaves Palermo at 20:45 and arrives Napoli 21:50, for example) you still have the whole day to see things. Being at the airport one hour in advance is more than enough (small airport, domestic flight).
Besides, a posto singulo [no way I would sleep in a couchette with a couple of strangers] on the night train is often more expensive than a seat on the evening plane
Count yourself lucky if you can sleep on a train or on a plane. I can't. I would be exhausted for the next couple of days and my vacation would be ruined.
But if you can, and if you like it, please go ahead!
But don't lump everyone togeteher - not everyone is like you IMO.

MyrianC,
Likewise for you. This irritable exchange began with your posting "Why would anyone consider a long and tiring ..." The answer so: Because not everyone is like you. As you can see from this thread, one person liked the overnight ferry, one likes the overnight train. So follow your own advice and don't lump everyone together.

With all due respect to a longtime Fodorite whose advice I generally agree with yes this is what you were doing when you said:
<Why would anyone consider a long and tiring overnight train ride to get from Sicily to Napoli?>
and flying and arriving in Naples at 10 pm then waiting for unloading, baggage, etc means getting to a hotel arond midnight - not for everyone either, especially not me.
