ITALY'S BEST RESTAURANT GUIDEBOOK

This time I am the one needing help from the Italy experts in this forum:

I have got some friends that keep on asking me: what's the best restaurant in...", "where can I have the typical italian lunch or dinner in...", so I was wondering, which is the most comprehensive and most reliable food guide around for restaurants in Italy? maybe the Michelin Red Guide (this is the only one I have heard of, but I am not really knowledgeable...)?
These friends live in the US so what I'd like to advise is some good guide book that can be purchased easily through the net, like Amazon, you know...
Thanks to all who will answer!

Michelin Guida Rossa is our preferred companion. I've used it several times in several regions of Italy, and have never been let down.

Thank you Josh!
I have also heard about Fred Plotkin's gourmet guide, and I have read in some past threads that he gives good and useful info about restaurants in Italy. Anyone has some feedback about this and other guides?

I love Fred Plotkins gourmet guide, but I suspect it is sadly out of date by now. So, use it with care....

Try Gambero Rosso. Available on amazon and they have a website. Gamberorosso.it

Even though Plotkin's restaurant listings are likely out-of-date, his descriptions of the destinations and local cuisines are very helpful.
