Spello is a picturesque, flower decked and charming hill town in Umbria. We easily visited many other villages such as Bevagna( it's flat!) and Montefalco. There are parking lots around the outside of Spello. There are so many good dining options too. You look across a valley to Assisi. We spent a day in Perugia, a large university city, and enjoyed it.. It would be a difficult to use as a base due to the dreaded ZTLs and having to drive up and down the large hill repeatedly.
In Tuscany, consider Panzano, hills and vineyards. You can see videos of it on Netflix, newly released "Chef's Table,Dario Cecchini" It is between Florence and Siena, a perfect location. Florence is wonderful as you already know.
The Dolomites have such spectacular beauty! We enjoyed staying in Ortisei and taking the funicular and gondolas up to the high mountain meadows.
Bologna is a favourite of ours with the oldest university in Europe located there. Wonderful food and surrounded by local sources, Parma,Modena, etc.
We also loved Puglia, stayed in Polignano a Mare on the Adriatic Sea.

Check out Chapters Five thru Seventeen of my recent trip report. Lots of photos, too

Bologna with a couple of day trips
Piemonte wine country - Our place in La Morra would be perfect (pic below of us drinking wine on our terrace and view. Make sure to book Room 4)
Torino
End in either Orta San Giulio or Stresa on lake Maggiore.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Have narrowed down my itinerary

starting 14th May from Milan

Day 1& 2 - LAKE GARDA, DOLOMITES- stay near BOLZANO
Take in some Tyrolean Scenery.

DAY 3- Drive early to VENICE- 3 hours- Full Day in Venice

DAY 4- Drive early to ORIVETO - 1 N

DAY 5,6,7- ROME- drive to Rome, Park on the outskirts in a parking lot. Take a bus, metro to the centre.
Stay in the centre near Trevi Fountain.
Celebrating my elder daughter Priyanka's 25th Birthday. She is set to be an eye surgeon.
SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
DAY 8,9,10,11,12,13- 6 DAYS IN A TUSCAN VINEYARD
Drive from Rome, Visit Montepulciano and Siena en route.
Have booked a nice place in the centre of Tuscany right in a vineyard. The owner runs an organic winery.
Florence
Pisa, Lucca,
San Gimigniano, and around
Some more hill towns and vineyards
Extra day- Suggestions please
DAY 14, 15- LAKE MAGGIORE- 20 km away from Milan Malpensa airport.
Drive from TUSCANY to Lake Maggiore will probably be 5-6 hours.
SUGGESTIONS PLEASE. Would like to just wander around.
Would like to drive doen to lake Como, Bellagio.
Will it cost me 43 Swiss franks on the border to drive down to Locarno?
DAY 16- Drive down to Malpensa Airport in the morning.
11am Flight- 8 am Check in- How much additional time should I calculate for Dropping off my car.
( I do have a Zero Excess insurance, so don't expect any issues with the car renter)

Have added Dolomites, as this is the closest ever that I will reach the area and I love that kind of landscape and the Tyrol region in general.
Have avoided Umbria, as I am packing in too much.
Also skipping Verona, Padua, Bologna ( don't know if a short stop with the car is possible), Pergia, Assisi.
Have been to Cinque Terre, Portofino earlier.
Have been to the Amalfi coast. Will skip Puglia on the south.

Suggestions needed on the 6 Day stay in Tuscany- Winery, Food, Vegetarian Food, quaint villages, Scenic routes.
Should I break it in 4+2 somewhere.

Venice to Oriveto and Tuscany to Lake Maggiore can be a very long drive. Goodle maps can be deceptive. Will consult Michelin too.
General suggestions on the itinerary please. Am I goofing up somewhere?

The plan looks good. I'd add Buonconvento and the ancient abbey up in the hills to the east, Pienza, Chiusi, San Quirico and maybe even trip over to the Lago Trasimeno plus all the towns starting Monti or Monte you can make. 6 days is enough but I'd also just go for a walk, lie on the grass etc. The Tuscan hillsides are really really pretty and worth walking or cycling in.

Another vote for cycling in Tuscany, even DH found it great fun... your daughters are sure to love it and it’s a wonderful way of getting a different perspective of the countryside.

We’ve almost always rented apartments in Rome but have stayed at the Albrego Cesari when it was for just a night or two. Just a stone’s throw from the Pantheon and Trevi fountain, they have a lovely rooftop restaurant where breakfast is served, also drinks and cocktails in the evening. Truly a peaceful haven, you may want to check it out.

Back from a wonderful 15 days Road trip

We had a wonderful 15 daya family road trip in Italy.
Thanks to all those who helped.
I still had a lot of questions about Italy, even though it was my 4th trip to Italy. But earlier trips were by public transport.

Will try n post my trip report ASAP, even if it's not in too much detail.
Thanks again.

Our last (4th) trip to Italy we visited places we hadn't been before. We LOVED Bologna, and the Emilia Romagna region . While in the area, we also visited Parma, Ravenna, did a private food tour, and made a stop at tomasettifamilywinery | tomasettifamilywinery (just email Guiseppe to make arrangements). These areas are less touristy than the major cities, and have so much to offer.

Oops...I see you already had the trip. Look forward to hearing about it!
