Well, we need tips, too, such as what you like to do and what your budget is. The possibilities are endless, so clue us in. You might also want to read the extensive threads on Italy right here on Fodors.

we would like to spend approximately 1300euros each after air tickets and we would like to drive to nice places. we prefer small but nice hotels. we like to meet local people, local cuisine.
our first thoughts were to visit milan, the lakes (2-3 days)and spent the rest of the days in verona and venice.
i wonder if in 6 days we could (or should) move further in tuscany or we should stay in the nothern part of italy.
are there any places that we should not miss...
thanks for helping...

Tagging onto Steve_James' suggestion, I wouldn't rent a car to visit Lake Como, Venice and Verona. The car will be parked in Venice (while the parking and rental charges add up) and not needed at Lake Como where you can get around easily by ferry. You can travel between these destinations by train.
However, for the food and better weather in mid-April, I'd go to Tuscany. For that itinerary, you need and want a car.
