Italy Rental Car Charges

I received a quote from a rental car company in Italy. The weekly rate was 200 euros but a note said that the total charge was expected to be closer to 600 euros. Does anyone know what the difference would be?

The difference is exactly 400 Euro. I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist...

LOLOL Betsy, you're too much.

On a more serious note--you really do need to read (and heed) all the fine print and notes. We didn't last year--we used a travel agent--and thought we were getting a really good deal. HAH! What should have been around $240 (according to the agent)--ended up being $450.

This year, we are prepaying and using AutoEurope. For a week in Tuscany/Umbria, we'll have a car for $300--and not a cent more. This includes all the insurance, etc.

I agree about AutoEurope. We prepaid including full insurance in Italy. It was a pleasure to pick up and return a rental car without a single extra surprise charge! Never had this experience in any other country, not even the UK also through AutoEurope.

Agree with above-companies like autoeurope and nova rentacar do not add dubious charges. They state a complete price up front.

I got the same sorta deal of the car is 270 and total charges equal 480.00??
Based on the advice form the boards I called AutoEurope and prepaid and got a free upgrade with all fees included for 228.00.They were very nice to deal with and I had a fax in hand within 5 minutes. If you go to their web-site at the bottom of the Home-page is a toll free number..You'll be glad you did.
Also a AutoEurope fan:). But there will be an extra charge paid at pick-up, at least there was 2yrs ago. It's an Italian Road Use Tax, it was ~2.50e/day and I believe it had a cap on it, like 14 days or something.
I booked via phone and was told about it by AE, ditto for an Athens' City Tax (~8e) in '00.
Regards, Walter

Walter,
You are correct. I do expect that small charge to be added once I get there. But that's it!! (Right????)
