Italy or Greece in January

I am toying with the idea of visiting either of these 2 in early January. I have been to Italy in January twice, once with DW and found the weather at those times to be fine. Cold at times but with some spectacular days. DW has never been to Rome and her once brief trip to Venice was not a pleasant one at the peak of the summer tourist season. She did not see much. I would like her to experience the Rome and Venice I love.

On the other hand, neither of us have been to Greece and it is a country she has talked about sometime visiting. Mainly, she really likes architecture and antiquities and that would be our focus in either country. However, what I come up with when searching the internet for Greece in January does not look that it would be a good time to go.

My husband travels to Greece often in January. Temps usually hover in the 50s-60s, and there is some rain. Since you've never been, I'd highly recommend saving this amazing country for a time when you can most enjoy it, which would be ideally between the end of May and mid June.

Thanks Weadles

Any other fodorite opinions out there?

Sicily !
Read the history first.

I second Weadles. Greece is really a warm or hot weather destination, best in shoulder season - late spring or early fall, when the tourists haven't yet flooded in but the weather is great. Summer is a zoo, but the Greece of your imagination is a lot less likely to show up in winter. I'd vote Italy as well.

Bob - I agree with you about Sicily 100%- I have been there with DD and intend to take DW perhaps in the Fall. We can catch a flight from Norfolk NAS to Sigonella NAS. The Greek temples in Sicily are in a surprising state of preservation/restoration.

Sicily!
I live here for almost 2 years now and January was very warm every single time.
I can advice you a site I found on internet (another forum :-). There's a lot of info on the site and the Dutch couple behind the site seems to be very nice, so why don't you send them an e-mail to see what can they offer you?!
Have a great holiday,
Miruna
