Italy On Fire - 827 Separate Forest Fires...
have raged throught the country in the last few weeks.
Funny I never thought of Italy as a heavily forested country but it must be - assume the weather has been very dry?
Do these fires impact the average tourist at all?

There have been 40,000 people evacuated from their homes here in British Columbia. The air here in Vancouver is hazy with smoke from fires in Central and southern BC. This year the fires in BC are burning closer to urban areas for some reason. Of course in Europe, the population is much more dense than here.
It's getting to be a constant feature of summers.

I would say that tourists are very often the reason of the fires : careless people throwing cigarette butts out of the car windows, lighting a fire where they are not allowed to, leaving behind their picnic areas broken glasses or bottles that act like a magnifier. Mediterranean summers can be scorching and extremely dry. It does not take much.

I don't know about Europe, but it certainly affects tourism in British Columbia. Some of the parks have been closed, whole towns have been evacuated, camping parks closed, etc at the busiest time of the year. And the smoke can be so thick that it is uncomfortable to breathe. A few years ago, our Okanagan vacation was completely shrouded in smoke and ash. Many people just cancelled their hotels and stayed home.

Yes it affects tourists. Not your average Fodorite perhaps, but European holiday makers are affected by the fires in southern Europe. Campsites evacuated and closed, poor air quality etc, just the same as in BC, and California at the moment.
Keep safe sundried. I hope you get some rain and relief soon.

Italy is a very mountainous country, and most of those slopes are covered with trees. And there is an ongoing drought in much of the country, and hot weather, although not the hottest weather I've experienced here.
One of the worst fires this summer has been on the coast near Rome. Arson is suspected.

We have been having fires that are started by lightening here in Fl. One was out by the space center last week and the smoke was so bad. I am sure visitors there were choking on the smoke.
Sundried, my Dad was a fire fighter for BC Forestry many years ago. My first helicopter ride was flying over the fires. It was scary work.
I think the heat is horrible this year and we are getting rain now but it was very dry. Hoping for rain and a break from these fires.

hetismij2, Thanks for the good wishes. I posted a reply a few days ago, at least I thought I did, but it's not here now.
Macross, that's interesting, I remember my dad did fire fighting duty on the ground, in central BC. I think it was a case of every able man was required to go, maybe had something to do with the union, anyway I was too young to know there was any danger involved.
Hopefully we will be getting some rain tomorrow, but maybe lightning strikes along with it.
