Italy May trip for 50 year old

I have made a few trips to Italy in the past but never solo. Usually, I travel to Milan and get quickly up to Lake Como. However, this trip I want to go south after arriving. My questions to the forum are:
Does it make sense to immediately go to Cinque Terre in early May (to avoid the crowds)upon arrival from Malpensa or should I fly to Rome and head to Naples or Sorrento (as a base for a few days) and then end my trip (for a few days) in Cinque Terre in the third week of May? I will spend the middle of the trip in the central hill towns.

We were in CT last May, mid-month, and it was wonderful. No major crowds at all, beautiful weather, and mostly everything was open, if not in full swing.

Hi jk,

Are you sure that you want to visit CT as well as Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast on the same visit?

I suggest that you fly into Naples and visit the AC, Sorrento and Capri before heading North.

You can fly home from Milan, Florence or Pisa.

See www.kayak.com and www.1800flyeurope.com.

Barbara - thanks for your help. Did you stay in a particular town - if so which one? How long were you there for?

Ira - thank you for your response. I appreciate your idea of not hurrying. I was thinking 7 days in the south, and 4 days in the hill towns and 3 days in CT. Do you think that this is cutting something short?

Jkate,

Have you visted the (I assume) Tuscan hilltowns before? There are so many, you could spend 4 weeks!

7 days in the Amalfi Coast area is very good, 4 days in Tuscany a bit limited, but depending on what you want to see a nice taste, 3 days in Cinque Terre is pretty good.

We spent 3 nights in Santa Margherita Ligure and would have loved 1 more day there.

Buon viaggio!

Dayle,
I agree that 4 days is too short of the hill towns. Would I be better off skipping CT and spending 7 days in the towns?

I think skipping CT this time might be best. 7 days in Tuscany is a minimum for me. To maximize your time, check into flying into Naples and home from Florence, Rome or Bologna.

Have a great trip!

Zoe

Hi J,

A week on the AC and a week in Tuscany sounds very good to me.

The CT will be there on your next visit.

You might wish to consider www.lesirene.com in Praiano.
