Italy - May OR September??

My husband and I are trying to plan our next trip to Italy! We want to go to Rome and the Amalfi Coast this trip... We could go for 2 weeks mid to end of May OR mid to end of September. I know now I can get the time off in May but won't know if I can get the time off yet for September. Airfare seems about the same for those times. Any advice would be appreciated! thanks!

Hi,

I went to Italy this year for 3 weeks in September. At the beginning of September, the weather was nice, hot, but nice. However, at the end of September some days were rainy and some other days were very sunny and hot.

I've never been to Italy in May, but my favorite month is definitely June.

Hi again,

I forgot to tell you that at the beginning of the September I was in Rome and Capri, but at the end of the month I was in Venice and Milan. It only rained once in Capri, but the other days were fine.

Hi LM,

In the Spring, the days are getting longer and warmer.

In the Fall, the days are getting shorter and cooler.

Sept is wine harvest and porcini season.

I tend toward Sept-Oct, myself.

May definitely. The weather is warm enough to do whatever you want but not unbearably hot. Everything green and flowers in bloom - and LONG days to enjoy it all. Also - still really the beginning of the tourist season and everyone is happy to see travelers - not as grumpy as they can be at the end of the year.

(And we have found water perfectly swimmable at end of May - and out hotel pool was always open - with lots of people using it.)

I have been during both months and would recommend May without a doubt. The weather will be better and there will be fewer crowds..September can be very hot and it is high season with mobs of people.
And if you don't know if you will even get time in September, I say go for May. And you will get the benefit of a wider choice of seasonal foods as well.

We were in Rome and northern Italy in early May this year. It was beautiful. Weather in the 70s, only one morning of rain in two weeks, gorgeous azaleas in full bloom on the Spanish Steps, beautiful evenings. It was perfect. But, you probably can't go wrong with either time. I just wouldn't want to be there in July and August, when it's hot and crowded.
