I have posted here before but I still need help. 1 week in italy before cruise out of Civitavecchia. I need to pick-up daughter in Florence 2 days before cruise and wife wishes to go to Cinque Terra before Florence and Assisi afretwards. Where should I fly to, how long in Cinque Terra and I guess train between all cities? Help!

lets see if I've got this right:

CT - 5 days

Florence - 1 day

Assisi - I day

C'vecchia - pick up cruise.

OK - way too long in CT, IMO and you should forget Assisi.

I suggest - 3 days CT

4 days - Florence.

fly into milan, pick up car, drive to Florence, leave car. train to Rome.

this is assuming you don't want to spend any time in Rome.

Thanks for the quick follow-up. We have been to both Florence and Rome; plus daughter will have been in Florence for 6 weeks at school. I am just trying to see some different things. Would you stay overnight in Milan?

Fly to Milan or Pisa. You can either pick up a car at the airport and drive to Cinque Terre or take a train as you don't really need the car in the CT. Stay in the CT three days. On day four, drive to Florence and pick up daughter, continuing on to Spello. Visit Assisi and Perugia on days five and six, possibly have time for Bevagna and Montefalco. Day seven, drive to Civitavecchia and drop off car before heading to the ship.

I would. There is also tons to do around Milan in the Como area.

we did a similar trip last year. flew into Milan, stayed the night. Took the train to Cinque Terre the next day and stayed 5 days. Took the train to La Spezia and picked up a car- drove to Florence through Pisa.

The train between the CT towns is very easy, inexpensive and runs often. There is also a boat that goes between the towns too which is nice when it is warm.

There is no place to park a car in CT nor do you need one.

Thanks for your replies! It seems that the general concensus is that we train to CT and then rent a car to drive to Florence, Assisi (and any place in between) and return the car in Civitavecchia. Ok! Next question; since I have never rented a car in Europe, are there any recommendations regarding the company or are they all the same?

We like Europecar- be sure to make sure to get the insurance, especially in Italy with all those motorcycles!
