Italy Itinerary: Rome and Amalfi
 

My fiancée and I just booked our tickets to Italy for the honeymoon! We will be there from March 5-10th, flying in and out of Rome. We would like to spend time both in Rome and Amalfi - any suggestions on timing and travel accommodations?

OK, first your trip is VERY brief - so going to more than one city would give both places short shrift.

Second, going to a beach resort in beginning of March - when it will likely be chilly and possibly rainy doesn't seem to make a lot of sense (average high is 59 and average low is 43). Many restaurants and hotels will be closed for the winter season, many ferries will not be running yet and your activities - except perhaps hiking - will be limited. Generally this area is very quiet until easter (near end of April next year).

With only 5 full days on the ground, you may be advised to just stay in Rome.
But for the AC, you would want to head there directly, if possible [per flight arrival time]: FCO to the Termini station in town, a train to Napoli Centrale and a private transfer.

As much as you want to go to Amalfi coast, you really do not have much time. You really only have 4 full days on the ground. You can really explore Rome in that time frame at a more leisurely pace. If you try to do both, you will short change yourself and run around like crazy. Plus as noted above, it is not an ideal for time for the coast. I would plan a lovely visit to Rome and make plans to visit the Amalfi coast for an anniversary trip!

Italy is lovely. You will love it no matter what you do.

You really don't have time to see both Rome and the AC, especially in March when travel on the AC is limited and many places are closed. With your 4 days, just stick to Rome.

Wrong time of year to visit Amalfi!

I would think many of the restaurants are closed, ferries may not be running frequently.

You really only have 4 days in Rome, which for a first trip to Rome isn't so much time to enjoy the sights.

I was afraid this would be the overall response :( bummer! I was really looking forward to seeing Amalfi without the crowds, but that makes sense that most places will be closed.

That being said, how do we make the most of our time in Rome? We obviously want to do some sightseeing in town, are there any day-trips or anything that would be worthwhile and romantic?

Orvieto is a very nice town. About an hour and a quarter by train.

The Amalfi Coast is definitely off-season but I wouldn't say it's shut down - it's not a theme park.

Some restaurants are closed and it's not beach weather. If you're desperate to see it, then why not visit Amalfi which will have more going on than Positano.

On the other hand, I agree with the above posters who say stick to Rome - with such a short time it makes sense.
