Italy Itinerary: Milan, Bologna or Verona

We are planning a 2-week trip to Italy in May. We plan to spend 3 days in Florence, 3 in Venice and 3 in the Lake area. We are flying in and out of Milan.

Should we spend all of the other 3 days in Milan, or do you think we should also go to either Verona or Bologna. We both like cities.

I'm not sure if we will be driving or taking the train. We are open to both.

No Rome? I would visit Rome and I vote for train rather than driving.

Maybe I should have mentioned. This is our second trip to Italy. We've been to Rome and Tuscany and want to see the northern part of Italy that we missed last trip.

Can someone tell me why this didn't post on Italy subject, but just general Europe. I highlighted Italy as the subject.
I'm not a fan of Milan or Bologna, so I'd vote for Verona.

And so do I. I love Verona, the Garda lake and the Veneto region: Bassano di Grappa, Treviso, Asolo, Sirmione, all lovely, and so close to each other. I'd stick with one region and explore it more in depth, rather than spending my time in Milan or Bologna.

Surlok

Why not a day/night in each of the 3? I did a daytrip to Verona this past April and was underwhelmed, though might have thought differently if I'd spent the night. Bologna is a real treat! and overlooked by most visitors. Staying in Milan for your last night would be the most convenient for your flight, obviously. I think a day and night in each would be just about right, if you don't mind the hotel changes (which are no big deal, IMHO).

I haven't been to Bologna but I thought Verona was lovely. We only had a full day and night there before going on to Venice but I'd love to go back. A lot of beautiful things to see.
