Italy Itinerary...is this feasible?
I've read tons of posts on Italy for first timers and the consensus seemed to be Rome, Florence then Venice. What about Rome, Amalfi Coast and Pompeii for a 5-night stay?
|
If you have a 5-night stay, I would suggest Rome with a day-trip to Pompeii. I think with only 5 nights, it is easier to stay in one place with a day trip.
|
We spent 3 nights in Rome and put in 16 hour days trying to see it all (we're in our 20s), and we didn't see half the city. This weas after a 2 night trip back in 2002. We are staying another couple of nights this coming May and we are hoping to get to the "half-way" point for just the major sights in Rome...
For a 5 night stay I would just stay put in Rome and maybe do a daytrip to Ostica Antica. Or, if you HAVE to go to a couple of locations... save Rome for a future trip and spend 3 to 4 nights in Florence and then 1 night in another Tuscan hilltown. |
This is what we did for our first trip to Italy years ago. We are very interested in history and archaeology therefore Pompeii was at the top of our must-see list. We've not visited Florence or Venice yet, but will one day soon. You've got to plan a trip to suit your interests.

Thanks everyone.
Sprin2: We too are interested in history and felt that Rome and Pompeii would meet our appetite, but the beauty of the coast also is a draw. I was wondering if it was feasible time-wise to do all three... |
It might be feasible in the strictest sense of the term, but you would spend a considerable amount of time in transit without giving yourself enough time to appreciate Rome or to enjoy the Amalfi Coast.
Mamc's suggestion of Rome and a day-trip to Pompeii is probably the wisest. |
ChicagoDG, when are you going?
|
Five nights is barely enough for Rome alone. Pompeii is worth the day trip though, one of the most fascinating places I've ever been. Enjoy!

We're looking at the early part of July.
