Italy Itinerary - daytrip advice

My boyfriend and I are going to Italy for three glorious weeks in May and I finally have my itinerary down. I would really love some feedback, advice on daytrips mostly.

May 7 - Depart Canada
May 8 - arrive in Rome after a grueling total of 24 hours travel time!
May 9,10 - Assisi (my friend's wedding)
May 11,12,13 - Rome
May 14,15,16,17 - Sorrento
May 18,19,20 - Florence
May 21,22,23 - Venice
May 24,25 - Cinque Terre
May 26,27 - Milan

I realize that it seems weird to fly into Rome then immediately run off to Assisi the next day and then back to Rome, but this has to be this way because May 7 is the earliest we can leave. My barebones itinerary above is pretty much set, but i would love some suggestions for day trips, especially around the Amalfi coast and around Florence. I honestly don't know how many daytrips we should do in each place, because I want to see everything! Any feeback, even on the itinerary itself, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Here's my opinion.
YOu can't see everything, it's a whole country with distinct regions. ARe you flying home from Milan? With other priorities, I'd skip the time in Milan except for an overnight before departure, and move around less.

I'm not the logistics expert (with any luck bobthenavigator will chime in, for one) but I'd try to
go from Assisi to Sorrento, then back up to Rome, then Florence,, CT, and Milan. I'd save Venice for another trip.
Or, include my beloved Venice, but choose between Sorrento and CT, not do both. You will lose at least half a day everytime you change cities, and that's assuming all goes smoothly.

Lots of travel, but you know that.
The odd ball logistically is the CT. I assume you are flying out from Milan. Train to Milan on the 24th and go up to Varenna for 2 nites on Lake Como. You will enjoy that as much and it sure is much closer.

Varenna is beautiful!

You can also day trip from Florence to Siena or San Gimignano by bus.

Thanks, everyone. I had forgotten about the Lakes. How far is it from Milan to Varenna? I think I would consider dumping Cinque Terre instead of Sorrento, I really have my heart set on the Amalfi Coast.
