Italy Itinerary Advice

My husband and I will be traveling to Italy from October 2-19th.

October 2-8 Rome
Staying at Marriott Grand Hotel Flora
Wondering if 6 nites is too long? Should I spend one more day in Florence instead?)

Take a train from Rome to florence.

October 8-10 Florence
Staying at Villa La Sosta

October 10-13 Venice
Staying at Hotel Ca'Gottardi

October 13-18 Tuscany
We will take a train from Venice to Siena and pick up a rental car. We are staying at Hotel Tenuta di Ricavo for 5 nites, which seemed to have great reviews on this site). We plan to see some of the hillside towns. Any recommendations?

October 18th: Drive to Rome. drop off the car and spend the last nite somewhere in Rome.

Hi K,

I think your itinerary sounds just great! No, 6 nights in Rome is NOT too much. Remember the first day doesn't count for much.

Since you are spending 5 days in Tuscany, the 2 nights in Florence should be fine unless you are really, really into art!

Buon viaggio!

Kejones48,
Tuscany recommendations: Volterra and San Gimignano, a drive down S222 - stop where it looks good to you, Siena, Monte Oliveto and Murlo, San Galgano,Monteriggioni, Montalcino and Sant'Antimo.

To be honest you can almost pick a direction and drive an hour and discover something that will thrill you.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights at Villa La Sosta a couple years ago in Sept/Oct as well. It was wonderful! Antonio was terrific! Make sure you ask for dinner recommendations, he will definitely set you up right. Also, if you have the time, take the wine tour that he offers. It was the highlight of our trip, just fantastic!! We stayed in the toile room, beautiful! We also went to Siena and stayed the night, 5 nights seems like a lot there, but if you are going to go off and explore I'm sure it will be fine. I highly recommend San Gimi! We flew into Venice (2nights Locando Orseolo - fantastic! Train to Florence - Villa La Sosta (3 nights)-wine tour for full day. Train to Pisa for quick stop, then on to Lucca for 1 night. Train to Siena, one night at Hotel Palazzo di Valli, then train to Rome (3 nights at Hotel San Carlo - very nice hotel in Spanish Steps area). Enjoy!
