Italy - Itin Overview
 

Just putting together a trip to Italy. Can you give advice on just an overview of details below? Is it possible and am I allowing enough time?

Venice - arrive and spend 3 nights

Travel via train to

Florence - 2 nights

Travel via train to

Rome - 4 nights

Travel home

I am not sure details of what we will visit, but we do want to do wine tasting in Chianti and see the leaning tower of Pisa when in Florence.

It's a very short time in each place, but doable. However, you won't have time for daytrips from Florence. After traveling from Venice, you will only have a day and a half there, not enough to even scratch the surface of Florence. Of that day and a half, it would take half a day to go to Pisa and at least a half day (and probably more) to do wine tasting in Chianti, so stay in Florence for the whole time you're there.

I think it's a good start. I would personally take a day from Rome and add it to Florence, but I am not a huge fan of Rome.

Are you interested in Florence, or are you only stopping there for the chance to see Pisa and maybe get into Chianti?

I think it's perfect for the time you have. To me Florence is the least interesting of the three.

I agree that I would not take time away from Rome.

I think the Florence, Chianti, and Pisa plans are way too much for what will be less than 2 full days. It depends on your preferences - I would not go out of my way to Pisa when I am that close to other towns in Tuscany. It all depends on what you are looking for in that area.

Don't cut venice short...its magical and the nights are the best.

After looking at this and balancing feedback - I am extending our vacation by one night to give an extra night in Florence.

Before departing, be sure to make a reservation in advance for an English "Secret Itineraries" tour of the Doges Palace in Venice. It's not offered continuously--and perhaps not every day. It's absolutely fascinating and will take you through passages in the palace not open to most tourists. You'll learn the story of how Casanova was one of only 4 or 5 people to ever escape the prison there. It will be memorable!
