What is Italy like in September both how touristy and what is the weather like?

Well Italy has microclimates aloveindy. Also with climate changes what was true in the past is really no inidication of what this September's weather will be. What areas of Italy will you be visiting?

That is true, but September is generally a nice month. It may rain sometimes. Last September it was just like summer. And it is midseason, the big crowds are generally gone.

Anytime in September is a great time to visit Italy, however, the middle to late September insures the heat of August is over with, Italians are back from their August vacation and smaller crowds. Should be beautiful weather for walking the streets of Rome and eating a gelato or sitting in the Piazza people watching.

My mid-to-end Sept visit:

6 nts Amalfi Coast - very hot and humid

5 nts Rome - couple nts of torrential rain, thunder and lightening, beautiful blue sky days, perfect temps

8 nts Tuscany & Umbria - 2 days very cold with an icy wind. Had to buy an extra wool sweater. Nice day temps but on the cool side.

You never know. Take layers.

End-September trip, 2007: gorgeous weather, from Milan down to Rome and in between. Neither hot nor cold. Rarely needed a jacket or sweater. Small amount of rain, but not enough to curtail any of our activities. The only "cool" weather we had was our last night in Lenno (Lake Como), and all that meant was that we had to put on our jackets. September is a great time, imo ... just enough still going on for it to be lively, but you're not in competition with hordes of people.

Well I love to be in Italy in September BUT twice I have encountered violent rain and electrical storms from mid September on in the area of Veneto. It didn't take away from my pleasure of the trips because I wasn't doing all of the normal tourist activities. Anyway, past weather patterns doesn't guarantee future weather patterns. But if one is planning to be in the north of Italy after the middle of September I would pack a few items of clothing for cold and rainy weather. It is better to be in Italy regardless of the weather than to not be in Italy!!

Our travel experiences to Italy:
Mid-September - Rome & Tuscany - ideal weather comfortable to eat outside at night, short sleeve & sandal weather during the day, no rain.
Mid-June - Venice & Rome - very, very cold in Venice with torrential rains & flooding while comfortable in Rome
Beginning of May - Tuscany & Rome - extremely comfortable with no rain
Beginning of October - Amalfi Coast & Rome - much warmer than expected on the Amalfi Coast, idyllic in Rome - no rain.
