Italy in Sept - what to pack? What to wear?
My fiance and I will be in Italy for our honeymoon in early September. We'll be in Venice, Florence, Rome and then the Amalfi Coast. Anyone have any packing tips? What do we wear? What's in and what's not acceptable? Do men wear Jeans? Are shorts a total No-No?

Judy - I know how you feel. I am going to Italy late September, and am also facing a quandry as to what to pack...
The weather is so unpredictable in Europe this year. I think I am just going to pack as little clothing as possible.
I will wear a pair of dark blue jeans and my sneakers on the plane. I will pack 1 pair of black pants, two knee high skirts, one black cardigan, one pair of low heels.
I wont include underwear and that sort of thing on this list.
But basically I try to pack really simple outfits (a la Hepburn) and buy anything else that I need!
All the best,
Elizabeth.

Judy, Paleeeze no shorts, no blue jeans.Everyone wears what is known here as "business casual" . No fanny packs,
no no no baseball caps , no bright and loud colors. Been to Italy many times and I find that it is best to try to blend in. Don't try to be an "American Tourist".You'll find that you will get around better if you don't try to impress everyone that you are "AN AMERICAN FROM THE STATES"!

Judy: Wear was is comfortable for you. There are so many people from so many places, you will see everything and anything, everywhere! Contrary to anything you hear, you will not stand out no matter what you wear; there are just too many people. As for blending in, that is very hard, no matter what you wear. I walked into a store in Positano and was dressed almost identically to the sales person. She knew I was American, before I ever said a word, and greeted me with "Hello, Madam"! You will not see business casual on the Amalfi Coast; it is a resort area, and you will see resort wear. If you go onto the beach on the Amalfi Coast, you might consider a two piece bathing suit no matter what your age or size! I wore a one piece, and, in that suit, I did stand out! Everyone, and I do mean everyone, had on small bikinis.

Alright! I think that an example might work best. I am Italian and I live in italy. Today is the second day of september. What am I wearing? A pair of Birkenstock sandals, a pair of deep red striped trousers with coulisse oth at the waist and at the ankle and a deep red t-shirt with a V neck. Yesterday I was wearing the same sandals, blue jeans and a grey T-shirt. And I do fit in perfectly.

Mike:

Go ahead, laugh, but it is true! ^_^ And I am, obviously, at the job, not leisuring the day away (although I must admit that for some jobs more formal clothing is required). Oh, I forgot! I have been wearing shorts too for a few days last week, during a short holiday in Tuscany.
