Italy in October? Weather?
 

Any thoughts on going to Italy in October, what will the weather be like? Will the Amalfi coast bee empty or closed?

It was very very hot in Florence when I was there a few years back.. and buzzing with mosquitoes, I might add! The Amalfi coast will not be "closed" in October.

October is an ideal time to go to Italy (even according to the Italians)--it's like Indian summer and no crowds, easy to get hotels, etc. We go every year for 3 weeks to France and Italy from mid-October to early November and it's beautiful--warm days, cool nights. Not to say it doesn't rain, but, hey--it's Italian rain!

The Almalfi Coast will not be closed- it will be quiet but there are plenty of restaurants, shops open. Be prepared for days mixed with sun and short rain showers. It should be warm, but have a jacket or sweater for when the sun goes behind the clouds. (I was there end of Oct-beginning of Nov)

I have been twice to Italy in Oct - one year we did see quite a bit of rain but still had a great time! The other trip towards the end of Oct. there was much less rain - very pleasant weather - almost 80 degrees in Rome which I wasn't really prepared for but by evening it was pleasant again. Both times there were still plenty of tourists in the main "must see" areas, maybe the Aamfi coast will be a bit quieter tho. Bon viaggio!

Absolutely! It is a great time. Note: We found it less crowded than summertime, but we didn't think it felt completely "off season." I can't speak for the Amalfi Coast (which I'm guessing would be quieter by then), but Rome and Florence, while not mobbed, were active - Chianti was less so as harvest time was over.

What will the weather be like?

Who knows!?! We were there in the middle of October 2004 and it was quite cool - not unpleasant, but I wore my fleece most days and wrapped a scarf around my neck on occasion as it was also a bit breezy. The last 2 days were much warmer than the first week. And, this was in Rome and Florence and Chianti. However, it could also be very warm - I had expected it to be milder, but simply wore comfortable layers.

Which part of October? How long are planning to stay there?

Toward the end of October, your chances of rain increase, so planning a 1-night stay someplace on the coast or the islands isn't wise. That could be a day it rains and obscures all the views and turns everything gray. Better to plan at least 3 days, because your chances of at least one of them (or perhaps all 3) being sunny are much higher.

But in general, I would plan a different Italian experience for October, once that centered on the fall harvest in Sicily, Piemonte, Tuscany or Le Marche.
