Italy in November...

I'm planning a trip to Italy in November... Any feedback? We are doing a planned tour by Europamundo (we are from Puerto Rico)... Any advice on places to go, places to avoid and what to pack? I had been doing some research and the feelings about the weather are divided. I'm traveling with my aunt, so it will be the two of us, in a foreing country with not idea about the weather (that is my main concern)...

Thanks everyone...

It will be cooler so you will need to layer your clothing.

Wunderground http://www.wunderground.com has a pretty good almanac so pick a place you want to visit and see what the weather has been in the past years... not that it is a guarantee but may give you a clue.

What part of November and what part of Italy?

Weather can vary from north to south, but jnjfraz's suggestion to pack layers is a good one. I've traveled to different parts of Italy in November. I pack my medium-weight leather jacket, and then have both short sleeve and long sleeve shirt/thin sweater options to mix, match, and layer as needed. Also, if there's a cold snap, a pair of gloves and a scarf can make even the lightest jacket feel much warmer.

You can look up historical weather patterns and temperatures on weather.com and similar weather websites.

Where does your planned tour go? We can advise better about things to do and see if we know what cities/areas you will be visiting.

@ellenem: thank you for the advice. I'm thinking to arrive to Rome n the 16th.

Our tour includes:
Rome
Florence
Venice
Pisa
Milan
Napels
Capri

Thank you both for the ideas...

It will be cool/cold and probably some rain. It might be "aqua alta" in Venice meaning it might be flooded. The rest of the cities could be warm enough for a tshirt, cold enough for a heavy coat.

Just a little clarity on Venice. The city doesn't "flood." The tide goes in, the tide goes out. At some times of the year, especially if there is wind or rain, the water rises enough at high tide for water to cover (usually briefly) the lowest parts of the city.

In November 2011, the highest tides will occur Nov. 10th at 8:00 pm and Nov. 25th at 6:00 am. The chances of acqua alta occurring are highest on those days and times and at about the same times on the day prior and day following those dates. Unless you're very early risers, any high water on Nov. 24-25-26 would most likely have drained by the time you leave your hotel to sightsee. If you'll be there on Nov. 9-10-11 and acqua alta is predicted, your hotel should alert you and advise how best to get around in the evenings.

For tech heads who want to keep track of the Venice tide forecast, there's an app for that.

Perhap I can speak for the southern half of the country?

We're down near Naples - on another island, some 20 miles from Capri - and these will perhaps give an idea of what the area can be like in November... Lovely a lot of the time, but - when it rains - it really does let go....

And here too the wind and sea can combine to fill the streets with water - though we're a little short on gondolas!

There's often a final little burst of good weather around the feast of Saint Martin on the 11th - the "Estate di San Martino" - which you may hit on arrival, however you'll not necessarily find Rome quite as pleasant as we've had it on several visits, mostly just a little earlier in the month...

So I'd advise layers, an umbrella - and back-up plans for when it rains!
