Italy in Dec. or May?

Hello!
I have a general question looking far into the future. I'm getting married labor day weekend '08, and I am in law school, so have to go back to school right after the wedding. Therefore, we have to postpone our honeymoon until either my winter break in Dec-Jan or when I finish the year all the way in May '09! Because we desperately want to go to Italy, we think we have to wait till May, but I wanted to get everyone's thoughts about what you would do...Go to Italy in Dec? (If so, where? We really don't want to be cold). GO somewhere else? Or wait till May?
I know I"m not being very specific but all I can say is that in Italy we were thinking about spending a lot of time in Tuscany bc we love good food and wine. Thanks for any advice!

Especially for Tuscany, May would be better.

Hi Sharbear,

My recommendation is for May. December can be rainy/foggy (read, possible flight delays) in the north, and you're more likely to see high tide-related flooding in Venice. While it won't be freezing cold, you will also have shorter daylight (can get dark by 5pm).

May is pleasantly warm without being too hot, days are longer and it's still the peak summer season.

I really understand your situation--I also got married Labor Day weekend between my 1st and 2nd years at the grad school, so straight back to school after the wedding. We didn't wait and went to the Caribbean in winter, but we would probably waited if we wanted to go to Europe.

May is the ideal time to go to Italy. Warm, great scenery/flowers in the countryside, long days but still not too many tourists.

I'm not surprised by these answers I suppose...just unhappy about waiting till May. But I assume Italy is worth it?
We definitely don't want to go to the Caribbean, so unless someone can suggest a honeymoon destination on par with Italy, we will just have to wait!

Tuscany would not be a good destination for December - its even cool there in May (though very nice)
The cities of Italy can be very nice in December-January, festive over the holidays - Rome is generally not too cold, but the cold an sweeps down on Florence and Venice and you can experience fog, rain, and snow- we enjoy Italy and the lack of crowds in the winter, but it doesnt have the lazy warmth I associate iwth a honeymoon.

Italy is definitely worth waiting for, and May is the perfect time to go. Plus, you'll enjoy it much more after your school year than you would in the middle, even if the weather was nice in December.

Tuscany is wonderful and you'll love it, but also go to Venice for a few days. It is a glorious city and perfect for honeymoons.

> just unhappy about waiting <

If it's any consolation:

Planning for a trip is as much fun as being there (well, almost)...

You are right TuckH! That is what I keep telling myself - and that I"ll have all this time to plan after the wedding is done, instead of having to do it at the same time! It's really the future husband who is more upset about putting it off than me, but too bad.

Yes, not only is the weather warmer in May, the days are longer. More time to sightsee, easier to get unlost.

If you were thinking of Rome rather than Tuscany then I would say that December can be very mild. But I agree with the others that Tuscany is much more beautiful in May.
