Italy in Dec/Jan
 
My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe for our 25th anniversary on December 30, 2002. We would be going over just after Christmas and staying through New Year's. Is Rome as wonderful during that time as Paris? What about other areas at that time of year, Positano, Amalfi coast, etc. Thanks!

My experience is at that time of year most everything is closed in the Amalfi Coast and Riviera area. We only found a few hotels even open and we paid more than they were worth for sure.

You won't have much of a problem finding a suitable hotel open somewhere along the Amalfi Coast during the period between Christmas and January 6. Not everyone is open, but many will be. However, expect prices to be higher than is generally the case in low season. After January 6, many properties will close until the beginning of April. Weather could be
