Italy in August
 

My husband and I will be in Italy in August (July 29 - Aug 11). I've read that many places are closed and cities are empty. Is this true? Will we still be able to enjoy our time there?

FYI- We will be visiting Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, Sinalunga, and Rome

August is the time when lots of Italians go on holiday. In August, Italian seaside towns will be packed and at their busiest; inland cities that are not holiday destinations will be quiet.

Cities like Venice, Florence and Rome are never going to be empty. Yes, some restaurants and shops will be closed because the owners are on vacation, but there still will be plenty open. The Cinque Terre will be very crowded. Sinalunga will be quiet, but you will find enough open to satisfy you. The real exodus begins around the holiday of the Assumption, August 15th. Since that's on a Wed. this year, people may start their vacations just as you are leaving, on August 11.

We were in Rome and Venice last August and Venice was packed and everything was open. Rome was quite busy and many restaurants were closed. There are trattorias in every area open, the city makes sure there are places for everyone to eat and enjoy. We will be in Rome the end of next week and I'm sure it will be mobbed.
