Italy in August
I am planning to go to Milan, Venice, Florence, Pisa and Rome in August. But many travel guides say that shops are closed at the time. I wonder if it is the case, does it really impair my trip? Thanks~~

While I have only traveled in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and France in August - - my answer would be: no. Your trip will not be impaired.
Not from shop closings. Heat and humidity - - well, that's another question... Best wishes, Rex |
I was in Italy in August some years ago and some little shops are closed but department stores are open and many other near touristic spots too.
Anyway, I don't think it impairs your trip at all :) |
Hi hk8guy, you will find some small family owned businesses closed in August. But that will not impair your trip. But do be aware that the heat and the high humidity will be difficult.
Family members came back from Rome this week (SIL born & raised in Rome) and they suffered from the heat & humidity. And in the northern parts of Italy it is even worse. And A/C is not the same as in the US. Not to be negative, but do be prepared for the weather. |
I was in Rome last August during Ferragosto which is the height of the holiday season. We had a wonderful time. Yes, many stores and restaurants were closed but all of the tourist attractions were open. Personally I thought it was great because there was less traffic and congestion.

We were in Italy the last 3 wks of August 2004. Milan was very quiet, Venice very crowded near P. San Marco, but just a few blks away was fine. Tuscany was not crowded, even Siena (with the exception of the day of the Palio). The Amalfi coast and Capri were where we found all the mobs. And they were mostly Italians.
As for temps, I'd say similar to California, not quite as humid as Florida. It was never unbearable. It's very easy to find shops & restaurants with AC. or a shady piazza. All tourist spots were open and most restaurants too. If there is a specal place you want to go to, make sure you check in advance. Our favorite Rest. in Venice was closed for 2 wks while we were there. Your trip will be great. |
topping... ever been back here? ever coming back?
