Italy in 5 days
We have been fortunate to get a last minute mediteranean cruise at an incredibly good price leaving from Rome. We leave Australi in one weeks time. We will be arriving in late autumn and have 6 nights to fill in before the cruise starts. We will enjoy looking around Rome but would also like to have something of a smaller city experience to chill out a little and experience the real Italy (not so touristy). Can anyone recommend a smallish, town like this and accessible from Rome probably by train. 30 years ago I recall enjoying Bologna and Brindisi when I accidently stumbled upon them. Something like that would be good but open to all suggestions about how to soak up the culture. I have enjoyed reading many generous responses on your forums so thanks in advance for any ideas.

I would spend 4 nites in Rome and 2 in Orvieto--an easy train ride about an hour north of Rome. While a bit touristy, it is also quite charming.

Try Orvieto. It's just one hour on a direct train from Rome's main terminal. Orvieto has a very dramatic position on a volcanic butte with almost vertical cliffs. It's small, not very crowded at this time of the year and has the most lovely main square with an exquisite cathedral, also Etruscan remains. There is a funicular railway that takes you from sea level (at the exit to the railway) up to the city centre which is pedestrianised.

Another suggestion would be Assisi - besides an amazing cathedral it is also a lovely hilltop town. But Orivieto is a good suggestion too. If Pompei interests you, you might want to head south to Sorrento and the Amalfi coast.

Jackie,
Another vote here for Orvieto. We spent 3 nts there a few years ago just fell in love with this beautiful and quite unique town. There is much to see and do. Also great restaurants, galleries, shops. Super easy to get to/from Roma Termini, a little over an hour ride. |
And...in Orvieto don't miss dining at I Sette Consoli. My favorite in all of Italy.

Wow you guys are fantastic! Thankyou so much. Orvieto sounds lovely. Does anyone have recommendations about where to stay on a budget (up to 70-100 euro)or is it small enough to find out when we get there?
