Italy Hotel Recommendations
 

I will be going to Italy next Oct 2010 and I wanted to see if I could get some recommendations on hotels in the following cities that will be approximately $100-$150 a night. I'll probably only be in each hotel 2-3 days, I would like to be centrally located, elevator is not required, I would like there to be a breakfast(if possible) included in the price. I'm trying to think of what other requirements may be asked.......just ask me if you think of something. Here are the cities:

Venice
Milan
Naples
Rome
Florence

Is this for a single? Your budget is 65-100€. Are you willing to share a bathroom?

In Florence, Alloro B&B should be in that price range. It's between the train station and Duomo, has private bath and includes breakfast. Also has a tea kettle in the room, mini fridge and some snack items (some free, some for a few €). Also fruit out in the small lobby area for snacking.

For more in Rome and in the other cities, do some research at www.venere.com and www.cross-pollinate.com.

FYI, your budget will be difficult (but not impossible) in Venice and Milan. Hotels there are just more expensive. You may have to spend more in those cities and then pay a little less in others to keep within your overall budget.

Also in Rome, look at Hotel Des Artistes. It's near the train station. A friend stayed there and liked it. (We usually sty in apartment.)

Hotel Casci in FLorence.

In Rome, I recommend the Hotel Paba. Signora Castelli is wonderful, the location is unbelievable (at the end of Via Cavour lies the Forum) and the rooms are clean and spacious.

I know that Rick Steeves is not universally popular, but he has a number of recomendations in this price range, plus a lot of money-saving tips for travellers which I anticipate you would appreciate.

Staying in convents and monasteries is a good way to ensure clean, safe lodging at a low cost, but there are certain restrictions of course. Have you thought of apartments? Apartments can often be more economical and are cool since you can save money preparing meals at home too. I use Leisure in Rome for my people all the time and the results are great, plus their English is good so you may want to check out their site (www.leisureinrome.com).

We just got back from Florence and stayed at Residenza Il Maggio which is in a very quiet part of town (15 min walking distance to Duomo) near the Il Maggio theatre. It is clean with simple decor, but very comfortable.

We paid (a shocking) 70E for a triple spacious room (#3...the only room with the balcony) w/ ensuite bathroom and french doors to a small balcony. Included is a wonderful breakfast.

Florence: B&B Peterson Via Guido Monaco, 25 – Florence though mis-named only coffee is offered. There is a lovely small place just outside the door on the corner, near train station, bus stops right in front and prices are right and super clean. Lovely hosts: web: http://www.bedinflorence.it/

Simple clean, 3 min walk from San Polo Vap stop breakfast and wonderful chocolate shop just across from door.

Near the termini, to some a minus to me ease of getting trains, bus’s and reasonable, clean and helpful staff. Nice street markets two blocks over. However not an area to be wandering around in late at night.

All range from 70e up per night.

It also won the following awards from Trip Advisor for 2009: #8 of 10 for "Best for Romance" in Europe, and #6 of 10 for "Best Bargains" in Europe. See the following PDF file.
