1. Florence SMN to Naples Centrale by train from €29.90 www.Trenitalia.com

At Naples Centrale, follow the signs downstairs to the Cicumvesuviana Railway platforms.

2. Circumvesuviana Railway every 30 minutes from Naples to Pompeii Villa di Misteri, fare around €2.50, journey time half an hour.

3. Then take the Circumvesuviana on to Sorrento, also every 30 minutes, €2.50 or so.

For your transportation options, consult rome2rio.com and make sure to click through to the underlying web-pages, as the primary page is not sensitive to seasonall variation in schedules.

Depending on what you want to do along the Amalfi Coast, you might want to stay in any of several locations -- Sorrento isn't actually on the coast, but many consider it a particularly good base for the area. For the coast itself, consider Amalfi or the higher-end Positano or, if Paestum is also on your itinerary, consider Salerno at the south end of the Amafli Coast.

Where you choose to stay will affect your transportation options. Sorrento and Salerno are served by trains; all of the towns I mentioned are served by ferries during season (and when weather allows) and buses. Ravello is on a ridge above the cost, offers exquisite views at a price; one gets there by bus from Amalfi or taxi.

Pompeii does have luggage storage, so you could, perhaps, visit on your way to or from the Amalfi coast -- that could depend on how early you're willing to start out. I wanted about 6 hours for Pompeii and certainly did not see it all; YMMV.

Hope that helps! You might also search this forum -- I think you'll find a lot of threads that cover these questions.

Maninseat61, so nice for you to post. Palenq, who always helped with train travel and sent people to your great site has passed away.
