Italy Flight Experts- Please help

Hi all-

I'm considering the following 3 flights for our trip to Italy this May. We will be going right away to Capri for a few days. The first two are the same price and the third is $200 more total. Which would you pick?

1)KLM- Chicago to Rome, 1 stop 2 1/2 hour layover in Amsterdam. Arriving Rome 12:35pm.

2)Alitalia- Chicago to Rome, 1 stop Milan 45 minute layover. Arriving Rome 9:45am.

3) Alitalia- Chicago to Naples, 1 stop Milan 1:50 minute layover. Arriving Naples 11:15.
This flight also has a layover of 55 minutes in Milan going back? Is that really enough time?
Thanks so much in advance!

I just flew KLM Chicago to Amsterdam. It was a very nice flight although there is no seat-back entertainment if you are flying on the 74M plane (the combi). Check out www.seatguru.com to get the best seats in coach-- rows 10 to 18, I believe.

Also Amsterdam is the best airport in Europe for connecting that I have been to; I haven't traveled through Milan, however.

It depends on how you intend to travel to Naples. The trains are very easy to manage and inexpensive, but I am not sure about the luggage aspect, we flew directly into Naples. The taxis are VERY expensive. We took a taxi from the hydrofoil port in Naples to Lago Patria, a suburb of Naples that was about a 30 minute drive. It was 45 Euros plus tip. Also, if you are going to Capri (it's amazing) you should try to get over to Ischia as well, the Castello Aragonese there is very impressive. Wear good shoes- the roads are very very steep. Where else are you going?

If we fly into Rome- we will take the train to Naples (on a budget).

From Capri we'll go to Positano, and Tuscany.
thanks so much for your thoughts so far.

Hi S,

If your plan is to go to Naples, go to Nasples.

You have a reasonable time to transfer on the way in.

If you miss your flight on the way back, Alitalia has to put you on the next available flight.

The worst that can happen is that you will get to spend another night in Italy.

Enjoy your visit.

Hi snorklefanatic, my preferance airline wise would be KLM and my preferance airport wise would be Amsterdam.

But, considering that you are going immediately to Capri I would probably book the Alitalia flight you listed as No. 3. It certainly would be easier for you to arrive at the Naples airport versus the Rome airport.

Ira: "The worst that can happen is that you will get to spend another night in Italy."

Why can't that ever happen to me? :-)

Hi Ann,

Arrive very early for your flight home and be one of the first to volunteer to be bumped.

Hi Ira: We always arrive very early for our flights but have never been fortunate enough for them to be offering to be bumped :-( When we arrive and find our flight has been cancelled.....they always find us a flight immediately

The only times we have been offered to be bumped is on domestic (US) flights when we have to get someplace fast.

Just no luck that way.
