Which is easier in March...Italy by train or car?

Where specifically??? Some parts are easier by train, some by car . . . . .

Cities...train.
Country....car.

Where exactly do you want to go? If you want to see the countryside, by all means rent a car. If you're just going to see Rome and Florence, for example, the train is best.

Agree with the above. Train's great if you are hitting cities/hubs. A car is helpful to see less dense regions and areas with interesting small towns (Chianti).

We've combined the two at times -- most of our travel on the train, renting a car for a couple of days here/there.

If you are renting from Europecar or Autoeurope in Lucca be careful about the open/closed hours if you are there on the weekend.

Because I am not comfortable renting a car in Europe, I plan around places that are easy to do by the trains.

Train! Fast, easy, cheap. Instead of trying to navigate the hopless road system, you relax and drink espresso on the train and arrival in the middle of town. If you want to go to smaller places, the busses are just fine.

If you really want to see countryside and small towns car is much better - esp for 2 or more people.

You aren;t stuck waiting for infrequent trains or buses, can stop and see anything else that interests you - and driving (unlike what some people think) is perfectly easy as long as you are competent and confident.

Train, car, train, car: it all depends upon what kind of person/traveller you are! We've done both, several times, at different stages of our lives, and we much prefer travelling by train in Europe. We can relax, we can interact with people, we can catch up on our reading, journalizing, etc. While it's true that with a car, you can stop at the side of the road or in a non-public-transport-accessible village, we've never found "training" to be a serious roadblock in our choices of destinations.

Besides, I lovelovelove the sound, the smell, the whole gestalt of train travel.

Going from Rome to Positano to Perugia to Venice to Milan

I still say train! All of those cities are easily accessible by train. And you'll get to relax and enjoy yourself while getting there!
