Italy and Sicily
I'm planning a trip to southern Italy and Sicily in May. What are some things I MUST do and see?
That depends on your interests and how much time you have. I suggest a couple of good guide books - then returning with more specific questions.
I'm interested in history and beauty. Only have 2 weeks, and guide books are overwhelming.
Check and see if the Green Guide offers a variety of itineraries lasting from 3 or 4 days to two weeks. Combining a couple of small ones might do the trick. The suggestions are usually found at the beginning of the book.
Lots of history and lots of beauty. Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and more. Agree with nyt - settle in at your bookstore with a cup of coffee and a pile of the kind of guidebook that has a lot of pix (e.g. Insight, Exploring) - or borrow them from your library.
My must sees: Ortigia, Villa Casale, Monreale, Erice. Click on my screen name for my Sicily TR. |
Claudia, even though you are travelling independently and open to suggestions, you might find it helpful to review the itineraries of tour companies like Rick Steeves, Insight, Perillo, and others to see what most travelers consider major attractions in southern Italy and Sicily. Once you decide what you would like to see and where you would prefer to stay, folks on this board will make many helpful suggestions about lodgings, transportation, distances, and other priorities. Be assured, you will enjoy southern Italy and Sicily….
