Italy and Munich
 

My husband and I are travelling to Italy in early June, and hoping to swing North to the Munich area to fly home. So far our plan is to fly into Florence and spend 3-4 days, visit Cinque Terre, and possibly Siena before taking the train to Munich (with a potential stop in Innsbruck). We are hoping to spend a fews days around the Munich area. We have 2 weeks to travel. Thoughts on if this is possible during our timeline? Or how long you would spend at Cinque Terre, Siena, or other recommended towns/cities?

Buy long-distance train tickets early to nab the limited in number discounted tickets.

There is also an overnight train from several Italian towns to Munich.

Consider flying to Munich. The train ride is pretty, but so is the airplane ride if it's a nice day.

If you fly into Florence, go immediately to Siena, then go back to Florence to see it and then end your Italian trip in le Cinque Terre. You should be able to find a flight from either Pisa or Genoa to Munich.

Be aware that the Italians call Munich "Monaco".

Good point. The "other one" is called, in Italian, Monaco-Monte Carlo.

We were thinking about renting a car to get to Siena, and possibly Cinque Terre, but Ive been reading mixed things online about driving in Italy. Would it be easier to just take pubic transit to these places?

The train ride from northern Italy to Innsbruck is one of the most scenic I've had in Europe. It's very doable from Florence (only 5,5 hrs via Bologna), but would be a very long day from the Cinque Terre.

Visit either the gems along Lake Garda, Trentino and Alto Adige or reach Munich by overnight train

Yes if just wishing to get to those places quickly -once there cars are useless and must find parking at steep rates perhaps.

Buses from Florence are best to Siena- then train via Empoli and Pisa to CT.
