ITALY AIR STRIKE

Does anyone know the scheduled air strike dates for June? Our family leaves Miami for Milan on June 7th arrives on the 8th and continues to Catania, Sicily that morning...Alitalia all the way...I understand that the Italian air strikes last a specified amount of hours...Has anyone any info on this? tried seekitaly.com, but THEY'RE ON VACATION UNTIL JUNE 5th...

Consider that you are learning to think like an Italian before you get there. :)

Ira: I AM ITALIAN!!! JUST AN ORGANIZED ONE (is that an oxymoron?)

Hi Rookie: Thanks for the alternate website...at the moment, it only has info for Rome and we fly into Milan. I'm depending on these forums for updates...everyone is so helpful!

LoveItaly May 31st, 2005 07:12 AM

Hi JEAN, here are the dates for scheduled strikes in Italy as of this morning per the International Herald Tribune's "Travellers Alert" article.

June 6th and June 26th. Pilots will strike for 4 hours each of these dates.

June 8th. Air Traffic Controllers will strike. No information regarding the number of hours.

June 23 State Railway Workers will strike for 24 hours.

JEAN, You will be arriving on the 8th when the Air Controllers will strike.

Unless the strike is cancelled you will not be flying to Sicily that day you arrive.

I hope this helps you make alternative arrangements (maybe an overnight in Milan). Italy has gotten to be real hard to deal with regarding their transportation strikes. I am so sorry.

Ryan Air's web site also updates their web page with the strike dates and times (ryanair.com)

We'll be flying into Italy the morning of the 9th. Does anyone know or suspect that we might experience delays resulting from backed-up flight schedules? Not that we can do much about it, but forewarned is forearmed.

Jean -

On the website I referred you to is a link to the "Commissione di Garanzia" which is presented in Italian only, but is supposed to be the most authoritative listing of all strikes in Italy. According to that site, the ENAV strike on May 8th is national from 12:00 to 16:00 and has not (yet) been cancelled.

Here's the link:

http://www.commissionegaranziasciopero.it/

Cross your fingers - maybe they'll cancel.

Yikes! Do these strikes last longer than 1 day? I'll be in Italy during the June 23 strike and was relying on trains the day before and the day after. Will this affect inter-city buses, as well?

AP6380 May 31st, 2005 08:36 AM

Yikes, I land in Rome June 8th to switch to a flight to Istanbul. I'm getting freaked out by this!!!!!! What do the airlines do in this case, expect people to sleep in the airport???

LoveItaly May 31st, 2005 08:42 AM

AP, you wait and you wait and some people end up on the floor. I am not kidding.

AP6380 May 31st, 2005 08:53 AM

I have many flights planned on Alitalia for the next few weeks. Please keep passing on the info.!

Would anyone know what happens in this situation. I have a Czech airlines flight (operated by Alitalia) on June 6th from Prague to Milan. I leave Prague at 11:35 and land in Milan at 1:10. With the 4 hour strike called this day from noon to 4:00,would that include my flight at 11:35. Thanks for any info.

Rookie Jun 1st, 2005 05:53 AM

Lucky you ~ according to the Commissione Garanzia Sciopero website (see above post) that pilots' strike is postponed to 26 June. :)

JEAN33437 Jun 1st, 2005 06:39 AM

Hi Rookie: You didn't mean that the June 8th strike is postponed, did you?

lyban Jun 1st, 2005 07:22 AM

Rookie,
I just went on to that Italian site and I do not see where the June 6th strike is cancelled. Am I missing something. Here is what I read.
