Italy - 'AgroMafia' & Olive Oil Cheating

Sixty Minutes had an interesting segment of how the Italian Mafioso have a huge presence in the food sector - from silently owning thousands of restaurants and also things like Olive Oil, which the segment dwelt on - saying 50% of the Extra Virgin Olive Oil sold in Italy does not meet the criteria and 75-80% of that Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil is not really worthy of having the extra virgin label.

I see the appealing title.
But I fail to see the relevance on Fodors.

It certainly is relevant here as visitors to Europe may be purchasing those items. They showed the markets in Palermo and
told how the vendors have to pay "protection" money too.

Ah.
I'll find a link about children working in Bengladesh so that visitors can abstain from buying clothes that we may find on markets. In Palermo or Paris.
And contraband cigarettes too.

All information on the Forum will never be "relevant" to every participant.
Best to chill a bit...the year has only started!

Actually, it was a very interesting segment on 60 min.

Yes, it's interesting information and relevant to visitors to Italy for sure. But very, very old news.

that would be very helpful for socially conscious folk so that they can avoid buying those - thanks for that valuable info that is coming! Be sure to tell us what markets those clothes end up in and where contraband cigs are sold so we can avoid those places.

Thanks a ton! Fodor's is not just about museums and sightseeing you know.
