Italy

Can anyone recommend private tours in Rome, Florence and Venice? I would like a car to pick us up and take us wherever. Also, we would like to go to Pompeii and the Amalfi coast--is it easier to go from Sorrento, or from Rome?

Thanks

Are you talking about private car tours in those cities or tours outside the cities? If it is for in the cities, you are better off touring by foot (especially in Venice, where no cars are allowed).

Sorrento.

A car tour of those cities makes no sense.

You can't do it in Venice - there are no streets - only canals.

In Florence much of the historic center is pedestrian only - no cars allowed.

In Rome it is somewhat more possible - but really part of the joy of seeing the city is doing it on foot. Much better to walk and see what you want - then take a cab back to the hotel if you're tired.

Obviously it is much easier to see Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento (rather than from Rome which is hours away). How many days would you have for Sorrento?

As pointed out, most of these areas need to be visited on foot, but you can book walking tours or a guide.

Are you planning to stay in Sorrento a few days? If so, Pompeii and Amalfi are much closer to Sorrento than Rome.

For those three cities you might want to pick up Turn Right at the Fountain. Even the 1971 original edition would work for historic centers.

I remember that Turn left at the Fountain book. I took it to pieces - by city - and carried it for years as a walking guide to interesting places. A really good idea for places that don't change.

There is a Turn Left at the Fountain book too, but I do not know it.

Thank you everyone. Will get the book. I can see that I need to rethink the "car" thing.
