We're staying in Soriano Nel Cimino and want to know how you get the train schedule from Orte to Rome.

It looks like there are regional trains every hour near the 1/2 hour all day long. A few more trains in the morning, and some faster IC trains sprinkled in there throughout the day.
No need to purchase tickets ahead of time. The regional train costs 4.50 euro and takes 50min. |
You have a choice of Rome stations - most trains go to Termini, quite a few to Tiburtina.
The Tiburtina trains take 1:28, the others anywhere from 38 minutes to 50 minutes. Depending on where in Rome you want to be, picking the arrival station accordingly could save you a bit of time and trouble in Rome. As J62 stated - most are regional (slow) and cost €4.10 or €4.50. On those there is no seat reservation - you just buy a ticket, but <i>remember to validate it</i> before boarding the train: Near the platform access (not usually on the platform itself) look for a yellow box with a slot - stick the ticket in there and it gets time-stamped. There are a few trains on that route that are ES* (meaning EuroStar) or IC (InterCity) - the fast ones where you need a seat reservation (the seat number and carriage number comes with the €12.00 second-class ticket or €18.00 first class - don't board with your €4.50 ticket!), for example the 08:58 departure is a ES*.. The 13:24 also come with reserved sets, it is an IC train, as are the 17:24 and 19:24 departures. |
Thanks alot, that helps! I've traveled around alot but never to Italy and since we're staying in a small town outside of Rome, it's a bit confusing. We will have a car though but we want to park at the Orte train station. Do you know if there is parking there and how much it would cost? Just thought I'd ask. Annette

Here's a thread on Slowtalk.com about park and ride options. Scroll down to the post at 8/22/07 at 10:31 am by kfrer which starts the discussion about using Orte as a train gateway to Rome and a few threads later about coming specifically from Soriano Nel Cimino. Note the train station is actually in Orte Scalo and not Orte.

I stayed in Soriano Nel Cimino a few years ago (and am going back in January). I took the bus to Orte. I don't remember the station saying Orte Scalo, but I'll give it some more though.

Look at maps.google.com. You can see the train station icon in Orte Scalo. At Orte, the tracks are outside the city, and there is no indication of a station.
Someone posted a photo of the station at Orte Scalo that you can open by dragging the yellow man icon to where Via Dante Alighieri meets Piazza Giovanni (look for the blue dot just right of the roads). In the photo, the station sign reads "Orte." Google is my friend. |
The Orte station is indeed in the part of Orte that is called Orte Scalo, on Piazza Giovanni XXIII, but the train company doesn't called it hat, it simply calls its station <i>Orte</i>, and that's also what Google Maps calls it, as does www.mapp.com (for Italy: http://it.mappy.com)
If you try to input <i>Orte Scalo</i> or <i>Orte-Scalo</i> as the departure station on www.ferroviedellostato.it the site draws a blank and returns "<i>Stazione di partenza: nessuna stazione corrisponde ai criteri di ricerca impostati</i>." (In brief "no such station") If you input <i>Orte</i> it happily reports on the available trains that I outlined here in my earlier post, the ones that come from Perugia and go to Rome, either Termini or Tiburtina There was a big fire in 2008 at the Scalo station, ten cars burned up etc. |
