Italy
I have had so much help with the first leg of my Journey to Spain in September of this year.
I've had my tickets since February and can't change them. Now I need help with part two of my journey as my plans have changed a little. My friend from Perugia won't be able to meet me until the last week of my trip I now find I have a week to go somewhere and I would most like your help in my planning this part of my trip Bos to Madrid 09/06/09. Leave Madrid on 9/13 to fly to Rome. (now the change) Would like to go to the Amalfi Coast from Sunday to Friday, 9/13 to 9/19/09 I'd also like to visit Pompeii. From Roma I can take a train to Sorrento but then what. I am on a fixed budget and don't want to spend over 75 euro bed and breakfast for 1 person. Friday take the train up to Perugia to meet friend. Do you have any advise of what to see, how to get there and were to sleep? All help will be most appreciated |
For Perugia, in your budget, check out Hotel Rosalba. It's wonderfully located -- right at the entrance to the escalators what whisk you up to the top of the city in 5 minutes -- and wonderfully priced. I've stayed there, and it's a wonderful find, spotlessly clean.
http://www.hotelrosalba.com/Inglese/indexIng.htm Many of the main sights of Perugia are located along the Corso Vanucci, the biggest street at the top of the town. (It also has marvelous pastry shops and eateries). The national gallery of art in Perugia is one the finest, most beautifully presented, and most important art museums in Italy. It's not very big, but it will give you a beautiful education in how a handful of painters spread out all over central and southern italy to decorate churches. I sometimes think every tourist to italy should go to Perugia first to understand the frescoes of Rome, etc. Are you good at googling? You should be able to find plenty of bed and breakfasts in Sorrento in your budget. I would want one that was (a) within comfortable walking distance of the train to Pompeii and the buses to either the port (for boats to the islands) or the buses (to the Amalfi towns). Have a great trip! |
By the way, the Hotel Rosable is also near the train and bus stations in Perugia, and it also has parking.

For Sorrento try www.villaelisasorrento.com . It's lovely, great location, and they might have a room available in your price range.

I paid 50€ a night last September at Il Nido including breakfast. It's in the hills above Sorrento so has great views, but also has a free shuttle bus to town. They will pick you up at the train station when you arrive. The shuttle will drop you in Sorrento, at the train station and I believe goes to the port. The SITA bus you take to Amalfi/Positano stops near Il Nido also.
http://www.ilnido.it/ If you want to be in town, Hotel Mignon might be in your price range. It's right in the center of town, but many hotels in town don't have views. http://www.sorrentohotelmignon.com/english/english.htm You can hop the local train in Sorrento to Pompeii (Pompeii Scavi is the stop). The entrance to the ruins is just across the street from the train stop. You can buy a 3 day Campania Arte Card (consecutive days) that gives you free admission to two sites (Pompeii and ?), discounts at others, and a 3 day transportation pass for the region (buses/trains/Naples metro/trams). Under Choose the Card, select Arte Card Plus. It's the Tutta la Regione 3 day card. http://www.campaniartecard.it/EN/Home.cfm If you are on a budget, the Marozzi bus between Sorrento and Rome is cheaper than the train (and easier). It won't work for you on 9/13 (7am departure only that day), but on 9/19 you can leave Sorrento either 6am or 5pm. Travel time is about 3 1/2 hours and cost is 17.5€. It drops you at Rome Tiburtina station (a major train/bus/metro hub in Rome) where you should be able to catch a bus for Perugia. http://www.marozzivt.it/biglietteria...pobigl=marozzi There's also the Curreri bus between Sorrento and Rome which departs at 6:30am and is 16€. http://www.curreriviaggi.it/ |
Hi G,
I can highly recommend www.lesirene.com in Praiano - 6km E of Positano. See my trip report for details: Ira’s Trip Report (Italy 2003) http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=34451044 I think that you would be much happier taking the train from Rome to Salerno. The ferry, about 3 blks from the train sta, will take you to Positano. You then take the Orange bus to Praiano. This will save you the connection onto the Circumvesuviana to get to Sorrento. For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia): See http://tinyurl.com/3cbhkb Enjoy your visit. ((I)) |

I truly can't believe how helpful you all are here. I am very grateful for your replies. I sent a request for a place to stay in Sorrento that was recommended here. If I want to stay for the last three days right on the Amalfi Coast, where did you stay in the 70.00 euro range and what was your favorite towns?
Thank you all for your help so far. You are all wonderful! Gina |
