Puglia and Basilicata are amazing places (we biked round it 2 years ago) probably worth searching Fodors for those two names for a start.

July August the place is full of Italians on Holiday the rest of the time just the localsbut the wine is fab

Hi Trish - If you re-post your question with Puglia in the title I'm sure you'll get some helpful suggestions.

We spent a great week in the Gargano area of Puglia based at Pugnochiuso - near Vieste.

The whole Gargano peninsular is very scenic with a lovely coastline - I can highly recommend it.

Here are some views:

Hope this helps ...

Returned 2 months ago from a fabulous 11 day trip to Puglia. Click my screen name to get my trip report - "My Party in Puglia" and then let me know if you have any specific questions. I will be happy to help.
