I would stay at a winery, like Guido Porro.

A lot of people endorse Alba because they went to Piemonte once, stayed in Alba because it is best known town around, and loved their trip to Italy. But they spent very little time in Piemonte and have not much basis for comparison. Just be aware if you like the idea of Alba because it is a larger town, it will be extremely busy during the truffle fair period.

Another popular town is the hilltown of La Morra.

Another way to think about this: Are there restaurants where you are certain you want to eat dinner & drink wine with dinner? It is not easy to drive the steep Piemonte hills, so try to pick a place to stay close to that restaurant.

And yet another: Is staying in a particular kind of accommodation part of your attraction to Piemonte? If you are looking considering Alba, Govane or Barolo because you are attracted to a specific accommodation in each, fine. But otherwise, you might want to be closer to restaurants, target wineries or other things on your Piemonte wish-list.

We do like the convenience of walking to restaurants for dinner, since we have been known to have a glass of wine or four.

Saw a couple of places in Govone that looked like they could be within a ten minute walk to restaurants. I will look at La Morra now and some other towns.

Yes, we do plan on being there at or near Truffle Fair period, which is why I'm even earlier in the planning stage than usual. Thanks for the ideas, and by the time I get to the trip report I might even be able to spell all the town names correctly.
