To go from Assisi to Switzerland by car. What recommendations? Do we go north, up east coast to Venice & then across or via west coast thru lakes etc?

Well, in my opinion Venice is a "must-see". I've been there 3 times and still want to go back. I think you could probably travel to Venice from Assisi, then cut across to one of the Italian Lake towns, then go straight up to Switzerland. This summer I took a trip through Europe and visited Venice and Bellagio, which is a beautiful small town in the middle of Lake Como -- would highly recommend it. We also visited Zermatt in Switzerland, which I would also suggest if you haven't planned your itinerary in Switz. yet. I've been to many towns in that country, but Zermatt is my favorite -- although there are many others I could suggest such as Grindlewald and Luzern.
