Randy, I prayed about this at church tonight. I know all will be good and the passport will turn up. If it got lost at DTW it will be found and turned in. Detroiter's are just like that. They'll do the right thing. At least that's what I prayed for

And just in case, I'm going to suggest that the passenger search for his passport again. Yes, it sounds silly, but it's not uncommon for people to misplace things (and weirdly enough, valuable things) under duress of travel and passport control and jet lag and so forth. He should pretty much turn his luggage (including every last hidden pocket) and every last item of clothing inside out, and so should his travel companions. People tuck passports into all sorts of weird little places when they're distracted.

And yes, this is the voice of experience talking. ;-)

Yes, Therese, my neighbor once came back to Manhattan from JFK because she couldn't find her passport. It was in her handbag!!
(Fortunately, she's one of those who really allows extra time and it was before we had security checks.)

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

He never did find the passport. Neither customs, the airline or the airport had the passport.

They left Traverse City on Wednesday for Chicago to get a new one. FYI: the Italian consulate requires 4 passport pictures. We went to Sam's Club here in Traverse City for the pictures and we had them in 20 minutes.

Thank you all.
