Not as easy as a taxi but better than waiting for a car which never arrives.

I have taken trains and buses on both arrival and departure to Rome-staying both in the center and in Trastevere, only rarely a taxi. It's never been a particular problem, but then, I don't carry alot of luggage.

Slowing down traffic is a tactic used all over- the cabbies in NY do it when they protest- but I for one would love to hear some of the roadside shouting matches that are sure to ensue in the coming days!
And I hope Prodi has a loyal limo driver!!! .

There will be 4 adults with 4 pieces of luggage and 4 carry-ons. So my husband is thinking, if worse comes to worse, he will rent a car (maybe we are dreaming that one will be available) just to get us to the hotel. Just another glitch to go along with the Cesari cancellation a month ago!

Hey, with a little luck (boy, in many ways, I could use a little luck right now), the strike might be over by the time we get there!

I don't see how renting a car would be a good solution if the roads are blocked. I think the train/bus is a good idea.

EEk!Don't rent a car!I'm guessing the hotel told you which bus to take (I'm guessing 61 or 40.It will be o.k.The good thing is,Termini is the first stop,so you'll probably be able to get onto an empty bus.You'll be at Torre Argentina in five or ten minutes(the 40 has fewer stops.)You can do it.

Make that bus 40 or 64.

I've been caught up in one of those strikes-Railway workers strike in Italy and it was most definitely not fun.
Training it from Munich to Venice, I was scheduled to spend only two days in Venice. Two precious days were cut short to only one. I ended up having to spend an extra night in Munich...in the heights of Oktoberfest.

Fortunately for us the hotel we stayed in had a cancellation because of the strike and we were able to remain at that hotel. But only for one night.

Then when we were leaving Venice the water taxi workers went on strike! #-o

Getting to the train station at 7:00 in the am when everything is chaos is not my idea of fun. Luckily our hotel was able to help us out in that area.

I think that maybe why it took me a while to warm up to Italy... :)

So LoveItaly and P_M I could not agree with you more! I too could not be paid to be in Italy during this miserable strike!

Oh dear. Please keep your fingers crossed for me! Leaving Sunday for Rome. Anybody have any idea which bus we'd need to take from Termini to Piazza della Rotunda ( Pantheon?) We're staying at Albergo del Senato. Thanks!

It's the same one.Piece of cake.Hop on 64 or 40 and get off at Largo Argentina.It's a major stop.As you exit the bus,it's a straight shot to the right to get to the Pantheon and your wonderful hotel.Just follow all of the people walking to the Pantheon,and you can't miss it!

It's bus 64- the pickpocket beware one! Stops right in front of the hotel, I believe.

No,it doesn't stop in front of the hotel.It runs along Corso Vittorio Emmanuele,which is a few blocks away.

And don't worry so much about the pickpockets,just be attentive.

I would imagine that shuttle services from the airport into the city would still be operating?? I can't say for sure but you might try and contact them if you need transportation.

I say ask your hotel for the driver to pick you up at the train station. My hotel hired a driver to take me to the airport and he was not licensed in any way I could tell, probably a friend. As long as the hotel could vouch for him I didn't care.

By now your hotel should be figuring out ways to get guests to them! Don't worry but maybe pack a little lighter just in case you do take the bus.
