A London native has

Our favorites are La Famiglia and Montepeliano for high end. For a very reasonable excellent meal try Orsini, across from the V and A or Cafe MOntepeliano, a bit down from the V&A on the same side of the street.

Both La Famiglia and MOntepeliano have websites

We always make a point to dine at La Genova on each trip to London. We have never been disappointed.

Tony Bennett enjoys dining there whenever he visits / performs in London. Many of his paintings hang in the restaurant.

I was checking to make sure Montepeliano still had Dover Sole on the menu and thought I'd post the websites of the places I mentioned above

Zafferano is very good traditional Italian with a twist - and expensive. Service can be a bit on a high horse, but normally is quite nice.

I haven't been to Locanda Locatelli in 18 months. It used to get lots of publicity, but nowadays it's become quieter. I cannot tell why. It used to be even more expensive than Zafferano.

Murano, Angela Hartnett's current place tops them both in price - and possibly is less typically Italian than the other two, judging by its menu. I have walked past it only, though, not eaten there yet.

I don't know Assagi.

With regards to La Famiglia, which has also been recommended here on this thread: I consider it charming - with staff having been around for decades, probably. I don't think the quality of its cuisine is anywhere near that of the places that were recommended to you by your local acquaintance, though. It's not bad - but it won't match Zafferano (albeit you would probably spend GBP 10 per person less at La Famiglia).
