Italian Railways website rejecting foreign cards?
Has anyone used a Canadian Visa credit card to purchase online train tickets at the trenitalia.com Italian Railways website? There is a note about foreign cards not working, but Italian people I know say you can use it, others say no out of country cards works on that site.
What's your experience?

Hi Sandy,
I think that Trenitalia has an arrangement with a private company to process CC transactions.
It is very quirky.
Some folks have reported being able to process the transaction, many have reported the opposite.
It is necessary to inform your CC company beforehand. Most of them reject Italian transactions.
Good luck.
PS: If you are flying into FCO, you can buy tickets at the train station there.

Hi Sandy,
No question trenitalia.com site is difficult.
Unless you are traveling on very popular days you could do as Ira suggests and buy ticket in Italy.
We have used ItaliaRail.com in the states and pay a little extra when we know we need a seat and want a reservation.
Good luck and Buon viaggio!

Oh, good spotting, Hetismij...I nearly missed the return of Sandy. Perhaps Trenitalia's rejection of his credit card is merely the first of many Italian indignities about to be inflicted on our favourite couch surfer?

Does the company that issued your cc know to expect charges coming in from Italy? You need to call them - twice, the second time to check and ask if they have your plans and the dates of your foreign experience in their system. If a charge arrives electronically and the bank's system hasn't been programmed to honor the charge, you're out of luck and you'll wonder why it didn't get through, likely blaming the entity where you're trying to make a purchase.
Now that's not to say that everything will go smoothly with Trenitalia - but it is a necessary start on your behalf.
