Italian Rail Maps
 

Is there a website which shows regional and local trains for Italy.
I have not yet found a map which allows me to see where we can train from town to town.

Here is a good start--it may not show all of the local routes.

This may be the best your going to find, and it's not really user friendly, but you can probably get the hang of it.

You've probably already found maps like this

which actually do give you a pretty good idea of what's available via train and what's not. But you can actually get pretty far planning a train trip by simply looking at ordinary maps picking the places you'd like to go and then using the Trenitalia site to see if trains go there (ie, if you think you want to go to Positano, plug in "Rome to Positano" and see if you get a timetable).

Just be aware you need to use the Italian spelling of the town (Venice is Venezia, Genoa is Genova, etc.) and that some train stations may actually not be close to the town itself (i.e. Montepulciano). When in doubt, you can check on this message board.

Maybe it would help if I pointed out that if you use the "In Regione" feature of the Trenitalia website, you should click on the region you want to know about in the lefthand column. Then, if you click on the "servizi in statzione" link, you will 99 times out of a hundred end up with a list of every train station in that region. With an ordinary map of the region in hand, you can plot some routes and get timetables off the Trenitalia site from point a to b.
