Italian Passport

Okay, so this question is a little off topic, but I need some help - I am in the midst of trying to get an Italian passport because my grandfather was born in Italy. He came to Canada in 1928 but there are no records of him becoming a Canadian citizen. If he remained an Italian citizen until after my mom was born in 1946 then I qualify for a passport. Unfortunately both my grandfather and grandmother (the only two people who would know) are deceased. Can anyone tell me how to find out if he renounced his Italian citizenship? Does anyone have contact info for the branch of the Italian gov't that would handle this??

Thanks!

Have you tried the Consulate of Italy in Toronto? On their website, under consular services, is A.I.R.E (registry of Italian citizens residing abroad).

http://www.italconsulate.org

Hi Jill,

Yes I have, I've emailed the consulate and I was told that I need to prove my grandfather's citizenship in 1946, but they don't offer any services to help me in that respect. The Canadian Immigration Office will do a search of their records for $75 but if he was never a citizen, they won't have a record, so I was wondering if there was some way I could contact the Italian government for information on my grandfather's file.
