Italian music for my Ipod
I know I've seen this answered before, but cannot find it in any previous forums. I believe someone mentioned some beautiful Italian music for listening while traveling through Italy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can buy this CD from Amazon or download individual songs:

I just downloaded a number of "Italian" songs from iTunes for our iPod & iPad. Movie music is kind of a neat source - I pulled "Be Italian" (Fergie) and the Finale from the album "Nine" and maybe a bit corny, but I also like The Waltz and the Love Theme from "The Godfather" Last year I bought a CD "Purumayo Presents - Italia" which has a nice assortment of songs from different artists. "L'Americano" by Marco Calliari is one you'll find familiar, and I also love "Gina" by Lu Colombo & Maurizio Geri Swingtet. I always like to have good travel music available for our trips, and always create playlists.
I'm wondering -- I love the Pandora app on my iPad, and wonder if I can use some of those Italia artists to create a playlist. I'm not sure how international Pandora is though. I'll need to check it. |
Eros Ramazzotti is an Italian pop singer - I quite like him, and he is popular enough that it's easy to get his music. Not sure what your taste runs to. Even though I don't know much Italian his music always sounds nice and hopeful. I like 'Fuoco nel fuoco'. I think Al Bano is also very popular in Italy and sings popular music (as opposed to pop music). He is popular for his personality as well as his music. He did a version of 'Volare' which was very big in Italy. I like his music a bit less, but it's of a different type.

OK. You just sent me back to iTunes to supplement my Italian soundtrack. I found songs I remember hearing and would enter their name in the search feature, then I could pick versions that I like best. I see I'll be spending a couple hours more today with this...it is fun, and I forgot how much I enjoyed some of the songs :-)
Here are a couple titles I've so far enjoyed selecting from: "Come Back to Sorrento," "Forget Domani," "Quando Quando Quando," "That's Amore" Artists from the Italian pop stars to the Three Tenors, to Gypsy Kings, to Connie Francis...instrumentals from mandolin & accordians, to full symphony arrangements, to jazz trios. You can come up with a wonderful playlist that you'll enjoy. |
Agree Eros Ramazotti is great, also Jovanotti (real name Lorenzo Cherubini) is very listenable.

I really enjoyed the soundtrack from "Letters to Juliet", the movie less so. No soundtrack was ever published on CD, but I chased down many of the songs on iTunes:

In addition to Eros Ramazotti, I like Laura Pausini and Marcella Bella.
|
I love Eros and Laura Pausini. Also Zucchero and Nek.
|
Try "Napoli Punto e a Capo", by Renzo Arbore e L'Orchestra Italiana. I'm positive you will absolutely love it.

I have him singing Finiculi Finicula. sigh.

A popular young group that burst on the scene after appearing on Italy's version of American Idol. They appeared on the US show this year and I was blown away with their "O Sole Mio". They look like 3 geeky adolescent boys. And then they start to sing....oh my!
Here's their Idol appearance. I think you'll enjoy it. http://www.amazon.com/Volo/dp/B004P1JMYA http://www.amazon.com/Volo/dp/B004P1JMYA I also love some of the old Dean Martin songs. Several good ones here. http://www.amazon.com/Italian-Love-S.../dp/B00005NNF2 |
Volare. Get the stepped up version from the Gipsy Kings (yeah, they're Spanish but they sing Portuguese and Italian songs too). It's the only foreign language song to win the Song of the Year Grammy, back when the Grammys weren't a complete joke.

Yep, I found il Volo and also the East Village Opera Company, and other nontraditional musical groups. I've had a ball making a good mix for my trip. There are whole albums full of "restaurant" or "dinner party" music. Once I found a song I like, I'll search on it and end up with great choices.

Check out the soundtrack from a great movie from about 15 yrs ago, "Big Night." Lots of Italian songs, plus a few American-Italian ones.

Wow, you're all great..thanks for the help

Mina is a popular singer.
|
Nek is great - and if you like his style you might also like Michele Zarrillo or Niccoló Fabi.
If you are into 1970s/80s rock music, try Lucio Dalla. His probably best album is DallAmeriCaruso. Entirely different but perfect for the Naples/Amalfi region... those old songs in Napolitano dialect, such as "Santa Lucia", "Torna a Surriento" and such. Kitschy but in their way wonderful, and this music belongs there. |
It's all about finding stuff you can relate to...and of course, you may find something playing in the background at a restaurant where you have an awesome meal that will forever be in your head after "this" trip of a lifetime that you will listen to once you get home forever.

The modern treatment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT-fOr29OfA Or perhaps you'll prefer the uncrowned queen of southern Italy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hWg6lTzR2I Not sure about the second film's soundtrack, but the first must be available for ipod somewhere? Peter |
