Well, my Swiss friend, an elderly woman, still rolls her eyes at me whenever we see someone in jeans in a nice restaurant. The wearers I remember did seem to be French -- nevertheless, my friend still considered it inappropriate.

However, I certainly would not say that for "older" women, European women wear jeans more than Americans. My experience isn't anything remotely like that, so I find that observation very unusual. I would be willing to say that this is flat out wrong,

<but I just don't know what kind of women Bob is hanging out with (Eur or Americans) for that to be true>

now that you explain what you really meant i can read it that way. Sorry that i read it the other way, castigating doubt on what kind of middle age people period would wear jeans.

And i believe you are sincere in explaining it - sorry i misread it and i do apologize for reading it wrong. But if you thought someone were criticizing your friends or relatives you could understand my anger at that. Sorry.

By the way you were very wrong - i saw older, by any criteria, wearing jeans lots even in places like Florence.

. I also know quite a few expat Europeans and see them at times in my home city which is pretty international, including tourists, and they do not wear jeans as much as American women do.

but I just don't know what kind of women Bob is hanging out with (Eur or Americans) for that to be true

Money talks.
But it don't sing and dance,
And it don't walk.
And long as I can have you
Here with me, I'd much rather be
Forever in blue jeans.

Hello!!?? Do a search on the board.>>

Yes, you'll find plenty of posters writing that jeans are not acceptable in Paris, in Rome, in Florence ..., despite all the posters who have returned from Europe in the past few years who have written that almost everyone is wearing jeans.

So, I hope this really is OFFICIAL and puts an end to the who can wear jeans where. Next I hope to see an end to the "white shoes" posts.

Any bets on how long it will be before a new post turns up "First trip to Paris. Can I wear jeans?"

I've been wearing jeans in Europe since 1983. And yes, at first some people did "look". Then the younger ones there began wearing jeans and it passed on to all ages. We just love our jeans.

And...I'm tall and thin-no big butt. I know some posters here do not want to see big butts in jeans or capris, but if you're comfortable with your size, go for it.

Ok I have only posted once before but I am dying to know what you meant about the white shoes posting that you're sick of. I just purchased a pair of white Mary Jane-style Skechers for comfort (and they are really very, very comfortable)for our trip the 21st of May til June 11th, last 2 weeks in Crete, Santorini and other Islands, but Paris in May. Most of my clothes have white in them so the shoes were very appropriate. Love to hear about this white shoe thing. Thanks in advance.

I think people disdain the clod hopper big soled glaring white tennis shoes that are the cliche of American tourists in folklore. Wear your white and have fun!

There are plenty of white shoes in all the shops in Paris this spring. They are not clunky, and, when worn, are always clean.

There was a period in France, maybe about 6 years ago, and which lasted for 2 or 3 years, where I had the impression that young people (age 15-30) had turned against jeans. I still saw plenty of jeans in Paris but mostly on young children or people over the age of 30. The young people were mostly wearing khakis instead. Then the fad passed, and jeans returned with a vengeance.

Wantogo,

Your white shoes sound perfect for a summer trip. Comfortable shoes are absolutely essential and yours will go well with pants, capris, skirts, etc. Good choice.

I was referring to a host of posts about Americans not wearing white athletic-style shoes in Europe. Someone posted "shoo the white shoes" that generated a multitude of strong opinions.

Your trip sounds wonderful, have a great time.

Luisah-Amen!! These posts actually make me angry!! Folks, you've earned your vacation!!! Wear what you want!!!!
Pleeeeeese!!! Just go have fun and don't worry about jeans, or any color shoes!! What is "in" today will be gone tomorrow...what is "in" in Paris, just doesn't cut it in "wherever"....what is "in" is usually ugly!! Really, have you seen the clothes on the runways? Yuck.

Ok, I feel better now....
Lets just go have fun!!

Shadow has put it in a nutshell! Go and have fun however you want to attire yourself - Europe dresses as eclectic as Americans do.
